Porto Koufo resort in Sithonia Sithonia

Porto Koufo resort in Sithonia

Do you know what the Germans hid in the bay of Porto Koufo during World War II? Why is Porto Koufo a real magnet for fishing enthusiasts? Learn this and much more about Porto Koufo in the following text.

Porto Koufo is a small tourist place tucked away in a bay, located on the southwest coast of Sithonia. It is only about 2 kilometres from Toroni and 25 kilometres from Neos Marmaras. Porto Koufo brings peace and tranquillity to the tourists who visit it, while at the same time you can enjoy an excellent evening out, for which Sithonia is becoming increasingly known.

You can learn a lot about this place just from its name: Porto Koufo literally means "deaf" or "silent" harbor. And it truly is: the scent of the sea and pine trees, the beautiful marina in the center of the resort lined with boats and yachts, fresh fish, and excellent seafood. All this far from any noise, including the rolling of the waves and the roar of the sea.

Porto Koufo is a real magnet for anglers

The tranquillity and silence are greatly contributed to by its location in an almost completely enclosed bay. This makes Porto Koufo an ideal harbor, with few strong winds, and a long, flat, sandy coastline. This bay is also known as one of the best, safest, and at the same time, the deepest harbors in all of Greece. All this contributes to the natural richness and great diversity of the underwater world, which is good news for both gourmet lovers, with shellfish and octopus on the menu, and passionate divers, anglers, or underwater fishermen.

Porto Koufo is famous for its excellent fish restaurants

Porto Koufo has a long and beautifully arranged promenade by the sea and the harbor, which comes to life in the evenings. Although there are not many visitors who want to spend their entire vacation in Porto Koufo, numerous guests from all over Chalkidiki visit the taverns of this resort to try fresh seafood and excellent fish specialties. For this reason, more often than you might expect, there is a wait for a free table here.

However, this "crowd" never lasts too late, as this quiet harbor does not offer many entertainment options. But, the more lively Toroni is nearby, and the cosmopolitan Neos Marmaras is only a 20-minute drive away, so you can continue the fun there.

Additionally, at the very end of the Porto Koufo marina, there is a lovely café where you can enjoy live traditional Greek bouzouki music with a view of the sea. What more could you expect from a real vacation?

In the bay of Porto Koufo, the Germans "hid" their submarines during World War II

The interest and significance, as well as the incredible depth of this bay, are highlighted by the anecdote of an "abyss" so deep that the Germans chose it during World War II to "hide" their submarines.

The nature of Porto Koufo will amaze you

Porto Koufo, with all its peace, seclusion, and sleepiness, is still a very interesting and naturally rich place. The beach itself is not located, as in most places, next to the marina, but directly opposite it. To get a full view of this town, the locals will certainly suggest you climb the hilly peaks above the harbor and enjoy the surprising and stunning view. On one side, you can see a bay so enclosed that it looks like a lake, and on the other, high, rocky cliffs dotted with pine trees and low vegetation.

Don't miss a trip from Porto Koufo to Kartalia

To the south, as the coast of Sithonia continues, there is an inaccessible, wild coastline full of caves, rocky capes, and underwater reefs.

The natural phenomena of the southwest Sithonia are completely inaccessible from the land, so this can be a very attractive sea excursion. By boat, you can discover many interesting places for swimming and diving, and some of the caves can be entered by experienced locals. If you are offered a trip to Kartalia, don't miss it, as this is the southernmost cape of Sithonia and opens up to the open Aegean Sea.

Porto Koufo beach Sithonia

Porto Koufo beach is a not-so-wide strip of fine, golden sand. Probably the most striking impression is the feeling of being at a mountain lake, as the horizon is almost completely enclosed, and the water quickly changes its spectrum to deep blue. The beach is partially arranged and organized, and in front of some cafes, there is a slightly longer shallow area. However, keep in mind that the water here quickly becomes deeper, so caution is needed if you are traveling with children who are still learning to swim.

Since this place is not particularly developed, on this long beach with occasional natural shade, there are not too many crowds even during the peak season, which could ruin your experience. Behind the road that runs along the beach, you will also find plenty of parking space, which allows you to leave your car right next to the beach.
