1. Likithos Fortress

Although Toroni is small village, it has an interesting history. According to mythology, Toroni was the wife of Proteus, son of Poseidon. Ancient Toroni was built in the 8th and 7th centuries BC and during the 5th century BC, it was one of the most significant cities in all of Chalkidiki. Toroni was a member of the Athenian League until it was taken over by the Spartans. In 348 BC, it was conquered by Philip II, and in 168 BC, it was conquered by the Romans. Ancient Toroni was the largest and richest city in Chalkidiki, and from that period, parts of the protective wall (fortress) and the citadel remain today. In addition, remains of the port were found at the bottom of the sea, as well as the former city warehouse. A large number of valuable items were found here and those ithems are now in the National Museum of Greece.
