Antisamos Beach is a pebbly beach on Cephalonia globally renowned primarily due to the famous Hollywood movie filmed right on its shores. Can you guess which movie it is? If you were captivated by the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, know that several scenes of this cult classic were actually shot on this beach. Naturally, there are those whom this very film inspired to visit the beautiful Cephalonia.
Probably, you won't stumble upon Koviou Beach by chance. If you're the type who loves spontaneously discovering beautiful beaches, you'd have a hard time finding this one. Even if you prefer following road signs, you won't have much luck here. Truth be told, although there is a sign for the beach, it won't quite clarify where to go or where to park, let alone where the beach actually is.
Myrtos Beach has been proclaimed as the most beautiful beach in the world, which is something hardly anyone can dispute. This beach is truly stunning, but as the old Latin saying goes: "There's no accounting for tastes." Myrtos Beach might be best compared to a gorgeous dress you can't wear every day, but when you put it on, you feel phenomenal. Similarly, this beautiful beach isn't for everyday use, but you must visit it at least twice.
Platamon Castle, located in the foot of mighty mountain Olympus, is built by the Crusaders during the 13th century. The fortress was erected between 1204 and 1222 and once defended the strategically important pass to the Tempe Valley, where Greek poets placed Apollo and his Muses.
Skotina Beach is a place with two characteristics that completely set it apart from other beaches, making it a unique beach in all of Greece.
Xi Beach is located at the southern tip of the Paliki peninsula, in the western part of the island of Cephalonia. It stretches for about 4 km and is situated 7 km away from the touristic resort of Lixouri. You can reach this beach by car or by bus from Lixouri.
Let's be realistic, Porto Katsiki is one of the most beautiful beaches on Lefkada, and certainly in all of Greece, so if you miss visiting it, you will make a big mistake. In addition, indeed, the sea color is unrealistic turquoise, and the fine white pebble, in combination with sea, looks phenomenal.
Elia Beach is a sandy beach that is narrow but extends for a whopping 2 km. If someone is looking for a recommendation for a beach with the following features: sand or pebbles (depending on the area), forest, natural shade, and pine trees leaning over the water, then this is the one to recommend.
At Nei Pori Beach, everything is flat, wide, long, far, and everyone might say that this place has no shortage of space, quite the contrary. A testament to this claim is the fact that this beach is 60 meters wide and almost 3 km long, so you can imagine how much sand there is.
Petani Beach is more an ‘’Instagram beach’’ than a ‘’Facebook’’. It could be said that it is the "younger sister" of Myrtos Beach, meaning it enjoys a similar level of popularity as its "older sister". The good pedigree this beach has is most felt in the chronic lack of parking, but luckily not in large crowds on the shore, as Petani is a very spacious beach.
Whenever you come to Kalogria Beach, you are welcome. Parking is right there next to the beach, and the shore is covered with fine sand. On this beach, there is also natural shade from pine trees, while the sea water is calm and clear. The beach is ideal for all ages - from 1 to 101 years old. You won't take too many photos here, but you'll enjoy the ambiance with all your senses.
This beach doesn't need a special introduction. It's well-known among nature lovers, the most beautiful of the beautiful, everyone's favourite beach, including mine, beloved and unique, Lagomandra! Of course, its perennial "challengers" in the super weight category for winning the championship belt of the most beautiful beach in Sithonia and the whole of Chalkidiki are the favoured Orange Beach and the phenomenal Platanitsi Beach.
Located at the southern tip of the Sithonia peninsula, roughly halfway between Toroni and Sarti, lies Kalamitsi Beach, the twin sister of Thalatta Beach. Thalatta Beach is situated to the right of Kalamitsi Beach, while to the left is the nudist beach of Kalamitsi.
Toroni Beach is a long sandy beach, with a large number of amenities. It is ideal for parents with young children, as there are rarely any waves here. Toroni Beach also has a lifeguard service, and a walking path runs along the entire beach.
Paradisos is the second beach of Neos Marmaras and it somewhat comes off as the younger sibling of the City Beach of Neos Marmaras. Essentially, these two beaches are composed similarly, except that perhaps Paradisos Beach has a slightly more pebbly entrance into the sea. And that's about it.
The city beach in Neos Marmaras is very well-maintained, nicely organized, and clean sandy beach. In addition to that, there are plenty of cafes where you can enjoy your favourite drink, rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers.
Kriaritsi Beach is located not far from the tourist resorts of Sikia and Kalamitsi, and is also close to Sarti. Unlike the neighbouring Tigania Beach, which is bustling with tourists, Kriaritsi Beach is almost never crowded. This allows visitors to peacefully enjoy the turquoise sea and the "golden" sand.
The summer resort of Nikiti is one of the most popular destinations in Sithonia peninsula. It boasts a beautiful sandy beach stretching almost 3 kilometres long. This beach is accessible from every part of the resort. Of course, in the central area, there are more people and finding parking can be a bit challenging, but as you move towards the edges of the beach, the crowds thin out, and finding parking becomes less of an issue.
Gerakini Beach has a semi-circular shape and is characterized by fine sand and a path that runs along the beach for almost its entire length. Along this path, there are benches for those 'old-fashioned' individuals who have the time to sit and enjoy the sea view.
If any beach can be called a "hotel beach," then it's definitely Kalyves Beach. Although, access here is open to everyone, whether staying at the hotel or not. Along almost its entire length of this not-so-attractive beach, is a road where visitors can park. Otherwise, there is no specially organized parking. Fortunately or unfortunately, besides hotel guests, hardly anyone else comes to this beach, so you do not have to worry about parking.
Psakoudia is a charming, small, and beautifully beach located at the very beginning of the Sithonia peninsula. Not many have heard of this beach, as it somehow escapes the attention of tourists traveling along Sithonia's main road, so only those who manage to reach the village itself can enjoy the charms of Psakoudia Beach.
Stiladario Beach is a beautiful sandy beach, with no nearby settlements, giving guests a sense of complete isolation in a natural environment. The only drawback of this beach is a large rock located about 5 meters from the shore in the sea, which can be inconvenient when entering and exiting the water. Near this part of the beach, right next to the famous train carriage, there is a small rocky peninsula.
Hurry up, because the number of spots is limited. How many times have we heard an advertisement like this and thought it was just another marketing trick? However, at Spathies Beach, the number of spots is genuinely limited, so you really need to hurry up. Spathies Beach is mainly for those people who like to get up early in the morning, not for those who like to sleep a lot in on their summer vacation.
Aretes Beach is one of the most secluded sandy beaches near Toroni. It is only 370 meters long and, apart from the sand and sea, it does not offer much in terms of "beach amenities." This is the perfect destination if you want to be alone with the sounds of the waves and the scent of pine trees.
Today, Parthenonas has only a few hundred permanent residents because most of the original inhabitants have moved to nearby Neos Marmaras. In this traditional village (protected by the Greek state and the EU for its unique architecture), there is an elementary school, three places where top-quality olive oil is produced, three mills, five or six spots where you can have coffee and drinks, and a good number of villas and apartments for accommodation.
Goa Beach is a small sandy beach near the popular resorts of Sarti and Sykia in Sithonia, Chalkidiki. This unique beach has a distinct character and charm that visitors at first sight, either love or hate. If you are claustrophobic or dislike confined spaces, you should reconsider visiting Goa Beach. However, if you enjoy unique natural settings, this beach is a great choice.
Nikitis Beach is a beautiful and not so crowded sandy beach located in Sithonia, near Lagomandra Beach and two resorts: Neos Marmaras and Nikiti. There is no dedicated parking area, but you can park along the road that runs next to this beach.
Neos Marmaras is a seaside resort located on the Sithonia peninsula, 125 km from Thessaloniki. Undoubtedly, Neos Marmaras is the most glamorous resort in this part of Greece, which offers a perfect combination of mountainous landscapes, blue sea, sandy beaches, and natural greenery. Walking through dense pine forests, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the crescent-shaped resort.
Palaios Panteleimonas is a traditional village where time has stood still. Although it has been completely renovated, this village has retained its authentic charm. Like in every village, all activities take place in the center, at the main square by the church. Here are numerous restaurants offering local specialties, and the surrounding streets are adorned with shops selling traditional products from the area.
Agios Ioannis is a beautiful sandy beach with a gradual entry into the water, ideal for both older people and young children. It is located near the summer resorts of Nikiti, Lagomandra, and Neos Marmaras. Until recently, there was a café-bar on this beach with great music and a variety of drinks, as well as sun loungers and sun umbrellas. Parking was plentiful, the water was turquoise, and everything was idyllic.
If we were to ignore the beauty of all the beaches in the area and objectively describe Porto Koufo Beach, we could say that Porto Koufo is a beautiful sandy beach, not too long or wide, located in a small heart-shaped bay with phenomenal sunsets. While swimming at Porto Koufo Beach, you will have the impression that you are in a mountain lake. The entrance to the water is easy, with a gradual increase in depth.
Destenika is a beautiful sandy beach with clear water and a gradual entry into the water. On the far left side of the beach, there is a café that offers sunbeds and parking, so this part of the beach is mostly frequented by the tourists exploring the beaches of Sithonia, while the right side of the beach is usually occupied by locals.
Tristinika Beach is a sandy beach characterized by sand in the water, while there is no natural shade on the shore. If you enjoy running in the shallow water, this is the perfect place for you. You can run 1 km in one direction along the wide shallows of this beach. In the evening, the beach becomes a zone for fishermen and barbecue enthusiasts.
Toroni is a small fishing village in the south of Sithonia. It is located about 135 kilometres from Thessaloniki and is characterized by a combination of dense forest and magnificent views of the sea and the Toroneos Gulf.
Thalatta Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that shares nearly all the same characteristics as Kalamitsi Beach. You can reach it by turning off the main road at the clearly marked turn for Thalatta Camp. The street leading to the camp is paved, and upon arrival, there is a narrow dirt road beside the camp that ends in a small area where only a few cars can park.
Metamorfosi Beach is a beautiful and quiet sandy beach, ideal for relaxation. Similar to Nikiti City Beach, it is divided into several smaller sandy areas. There is also a shower cabin and a café offering sunbeds at this beach. In the afternoon, you might find some natural shade from the pine trees overhanging the beach.
Achlada is a small sandy beach near Sarti. On this beach there is a small bar where you can rent sunbeds. On the left side of the beach, there is a small marina with local fishing boats, while the right side of the beach offers a view of the open sea. People usually come to Achlada Beach when there are big waves at Sarti and Platania beaches. Because of this characteristic, Achlada Beach is ideal for parents with small children.
Platanitsi Beach is essentially a copy-paste of Armenistis Beach. They are literally identical in shape, surrounded by pine trees, and interestingly, both beaches have campsites. The main difference lies in the color of the sand and water. At Armenistis Beach, the sand is almost white, giving the sea a turquoise hue, whereas at Platanitsi Beach, the sand is yellowish, resulting in a darker shade of water. These two beaches are only 8.5 kilometres apart.
Some might wonder why anyone would go to the suburban Platania Beach when they have the beautiful and spacious main beach of Sarti at their disposal. What can I say? Maybe these people are right. In addition, when you add that at Platania Beach, you might encounter some rocks while entering the water (which you won't find at Sarti Beach), the arguments become even stronger. Maybe it really doesn’t make any sense to come here. However, despite this, I would still like to say a word or two in defence of Platania Beach.
And now, this is the moment you've all been waiting for. It's time to introduce the eastern corner of Sithonia, Orange Beach, also known as Kavourotripes or in Greek – Portokali. This is a sandy beach, with postcard-like turquoise water, but it's only 45 meters long!
About 100 km from Thessaloniki, at the very beginning of Sithonia, lies Metamorfosi, a resort that, as its name suggests, will "transform" you. It is often called the air spa of Chalkidiki. Indeed, the pine forest, which is abundant here, creates a unique microclimate.
The beach in Sarti is sandy with darker sand, which results in the water being slightly darker and lacking the turquoise color. Upon entering the water, you won't have the chance to walk in the shallow area as the depth increases quickly. Therefore, parents with children, please pay special attention to your little ones. Along the entire beach, except in its left part, runs a street with plenty of parking spaces, so luckily, you don’t have to worry about that.
Karidi Beach is a small sandy and shallow natural cove with clear water, ideal for children's play. It is literally like one big children's pool. The shore has fine sand, perfect for building castles and fortresses. Naturally, there is no rest for parents here, who must constantly keep an eye on their little ones.
Vourvourou Beach is sandy, with clear water and rarely any with any waves. The sea near the shore is shallow, making it very suitable for young children. As the beach is almost 3.5 km long, the availability of cafes, sunbeds, and water sports depends on where you are. The cleanliness of the beach also depends on how well the property owners, whose establishments directly face the beach, take care of it.
Tigania is a sandy beach with turquoise water, reminiscent of Orange Beach (aka Portokali), except it is surrounded by rocks rather than a pine forest. Tigania Beach is larger than Orange Beach, so you won’t feel overly crowded. However, during the peak season, it might be harder to find a sunbed in the café if you arrive late.
Nikiti is one of the oldest towns on the entire Chalkidiki peninsula. It is located in the northwest of the Sithonia peninsula, about 39 km east of Nea Moudania and approximately 95 km southeast of Thessaloniki, situated between the summer resorts of Metamorfosis and Neos Marmaras.
Porto Koufo is a small tourist place tucked away in a bay, located on the southwest coast of Sithonia. It is only about 2 kilometres from Toroni and 25 kilometres from Neos Marmaras. Porto Koufo brings peace and tranquillity to the tourists who visit it, while at the same time you can enjoy an excellent evening out, for which Sithonia is becoming increasingly known.
Sarti is located on the eastern coast of Sithonia, and you are always welcome in this beautiful seaside resort. Sarti has remained a place where nature, local customs, tradition, and culture are almost untouched. Fortunately, at least for now, mass tourism hasn't taken hold here.
Gerakini is a charming seaside resort located just 70 km from Thessaloniki. According to legend, an ancient queen named Gerakina lived here, and the place was named after her. The great Greek poet Nikos Kavadias also wrote about Gerakini, enchanted by its beauty during his travels.
Castel Beach Platamon is located just below Platamon Castle and is the last in a series of beaches that start from the tourist resort of Plaka, forming a large mega beach. Many consider this beach to be part of Panteleimonas Beach, as there is no natural barrier separating the two.
Leptokarya Beach is essentially just a part of a beach that stretches all the way from the summer resort of Plaka to the Platamon Castle. With a total length of nearly 11 km, this mega beach has more or less the same characteristics throughout its length. Beach has a pebbly-sandy shore, with pebbles in the shallow waters and sand a bit further into the sea.
Pydna was a small town in ancient Macedonia and the most important site in the entire Pieria region. It is located 16 km northeast of Katerini and just 2.5 km from the resort town of Makrygialos. Archaeologists have discovered that people lived in this area even before the Greeks, and their city was likely destroyed by the supervolcano of Santorini about 3,000 years ago.
Kalamitsi is the southernmost place on the east coast of Sithonia. It is 15 km from Sarti, about 30 km from Neos Marmaras, and about 150 km from Thessaloniki. It is one of the smallest and quietest summer resorts in all of Chalkidiki. Kalamitsi coast consists of one large bay made up of three smaller bays.
Pydna is a small and hidden sandy beach with exceptionally shallow water, making it ideal for parents with small children. Although this beach does not attract many visitors, even a small number can easily stir up the water, turning its beautiful light blue shade into brown. Additionally, like almost every beach with shallow and warm water, small jellyfish occasionally appear.
Paralia is an almost 3-kilometer-long sandy beach that runs along the entire length of the summer resort of the same name. Along the entire beach, there are numerous cafes offering sunbeds and sun umbrellas. The seabed is also sandy, and the sea is so shallow that it will take you a few minutes of walking in the water to reach deeper water. This long shallow area is perfect for carefree children's play, of course under adult supervision.
The beach of the small resort Olympic Beach is almost identical to the beach at Paralia Katerini, with a few minor differences. Olympic Beach is a sandy beach with shallow and warm water, where, unlike Paralia, the crowds are not overwhelming. This is the main difference between Paralia and Olympic Beach, which is evident considering that the resort of Olympic Beach is at least three times smaller than Paralia.
The summer resort of Vourvourou is located in Sithonia, south of Agios Nikolaos, and about 120 km from Thessaloniki. This is not a typical resort as you might expect in Chalkidiki. Usually, resorts in Sithonia are small towns with a center, promenade and square. Unfortunately, Vourvourou has none of these, and it looks more like a weekend settlement with one main street around which all activities take place.
Makrygialos Beach is a fairly long, sandy-pebble beach located in the namesake resort. The beach is actually situated below the level of the resort, meaning there is a 2-meter height difference between the beach and the resort's promenade. This implies that you need to descend stairs from the main promenade to reach the beach.
Gritsa Beach is the widest beach I have seen in Greece, and I've seen quite a few. It is so vast that you might wonder if you are in a rocky desert or on a beach. In an emergency, it could easily be used as a runway for small to medium-sized airplanes.
Variko Beach is one of the two beaches belonging to the Limani Litochorou summer resort. Unlike the neighbouring Gritsa Beach, which is very wide, busy, and pebbly, Variko Beach is sandy, less crowded, and not as wide.
Mylos (Molos) Beach (also known as Lemon Beach) is a sandy-pebble beach on the shore, with fine pebbles in the water. As with most beaches in the Olympus region, the sea here is shallow. The beach is equipped with changing cabins, showers, and taverns that offer sunbeds and sun umbrellas.
Plaka Beach offers a different kind of tourism experience than what we’re used to in the Olympus region. This is a beach where it does not matter whether the sea is more or less blue, whether there are algae or seaweed, or whether the shore is pebbly, sandy, or rocky. This is a place where people don’t take selfies or check the time, but simply enjoy the moment and the opportunity to be by the sea, allowing all senses to bask in the experience.
Panteleimonas Beach is the second-to-last beach in the stretch from Plaka to Platamon Castle. It is more or less similar to the other beaches in this part of the Olympus region, consisting of a mix of pebbles and sand, with Panteleimonas Beach having slightly finer sand and smaller pebbles.
Platamon Beach is quite unique. I'm not referring to the narrow part of this beach with large pebbles and rocks situated below the road running along the sea. That part isn't particularly attractive or interesting to tourists. Instead, I am talking about five semi-circular beaches, artificially created. These are five small coves, or rather marinas.
Makrygialos is a resort located about 50 kilometers south of Thessaloniki and around 20 kilometers north of Katerini Paralia. Many Greeks from nearby cities, especially Thessaloniki, own summer houses here. The name of this resort translates to "long coast," which is a fitting description, as it is known for its long, sandy-pebbly beach. Though narrow, the beach features warm water and a gradual increase in depth.
The nudist beach in Nei Pori is located between the resort of Nei Pori and the sparsely populated village of Kastri, which is still in its early stages of development. There are no roads behind the beach, only a lake, making this an ideal spot for enjoying peace and quiet, accompanied by the croaking of frogs. The beach itself is sandy, with shallow, crystal-clear water.
The beach of the Nea Mesangala resort connects to the nudist beach of Nei Pori. In terms of natural characteristics, it is similar to Nei Pori Beach, but it is significantly narrower. This means that it is a beautiful sandy beach, very long, with shallow waters and the occasional tavern offering sun loungers and sun umbrellas right on the beach.
